Small Business Accelerator Program

HomeWork: Small Business Accelerator

Autism Speaks MSBA

The Midwest Small Business Accelerator (MSBA) was developed as a pilot program to provide technical assistance in business development to those interested in creating jobs for people with autism. The program included a twelve-week curriculum to help emerging small businesses stabilize their offering and identify sustainable job opportunities for adults with autism. From creating a business plan to pitching investors, the program brought together industry leaders and experts who provided advice and mentorship through workshops, presentations and panel discussions. The pilot program accepted five, diverse businesses from around the Midwest and culminated in an Autism Employment Symposium event where all MSBA participants pitched their business ideas and job creation plans to a panel of experts in a “Pitch Fest.”

All aspects of the program – curriculum design, marketing, recruiting, course facilitation and event production – were created and implemented by Bloompath Studios, in partnership with AutonomyWorks. Through the program pilot, Autism Speaks provided business leadership and expertise to small business owners, while strengthening a community of people who share a mission to make the world a better place for people with autism.

Outcomes

  • 5 businesses from three states participated in the 12-week program

  • 22 guest speakers and advisors provided support

  • Participants received 80 hours of technical assistance

  • Hands-on learning experience included 3 workshops, 5 panel discussions and Resource Toolkit

  • 170 community leaders, 7 judges and 6 self-advocates participated in the Employment Symposium

  • 28% budget reinvested in participating businesses

I liked working side-by side with other partners who are developing their own business plans. This was one of the best parts of the Accelerator...to work through the business plan, hear each participant’s questions and see other types of employment opportunities at various stages of development. This was an excellent way to learn from the other participants.
